Bell's palsy is paralysis of the facial muscles. The 7th cranial nerve from our brain is called the facial nerve, which controls the activity of the facial muscles. When it becomes partially or completely paralyzed, it is called facial paralysis or Bell's palsy.

It can happen to men and women of any age. However, it is more common in women.

What causes Bell's Palsy?

Bell's palsy can be caused by several reasons. Notable among these are virus infection, middle ear infection or infection, cold or traumatic causes, brain stroke, head injury, facial tumor, facial nerve injury after ear or parotid gland surgery etc.

How to understand Bell's palsy

Symptoms of Bell's palsy appear suddenly. The affected patient's face turns to one side. The eye on the affected side does not close, watery eyes. If you want to porter, it goes to the other side or falls. Difficulty swallowing food. Cannot fold forehead or frown. Sometimes it is difficult to speak. It is difficult to drink water. All in all, the normal function of the face is lost.

How Bell's Palsy is Diagnosed

Clinically this is easy to understand by examining the patient's facial muscle activity. However, some pathological and radiological tests are often required to diagnose the cause. Such as complete blood count, X-ray of temporo-mandibular joint, nerve conduction velocity etc.

What is the treatment for Bell's Palsy?

Treatment of this disease depends on its cause. Medicines vary according to the cause, but in all cases physiotherapy is the main treatment along with medicine. A specialist physiotherapy doctor provides treatment according to the patient's condition. For example –
Mechanical therapy: IRR, paraffin wax therapy, ultrasound therapy, electrical stimulation.
Manual therapy: proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation, infra-red radiation therapy, electrical stimulation therapy, active and passive facial muscle exercise, speech re-education therapy, ballooning exercise, wrinkling exercise, etc.
During the treatment, the patient has to follow certain rules.
Stay away from cold weather.
Ice cream and cold food from the fridge should not be eaten.
When going outside or in the sun, sunglasses should be used to prevent dust from entering the affected eyes.
A handkerchief or soft cloth should be placed over the affected eye while sleeping at night, so that nothing can fall into the eye.
