Migraine Aura
Migraine with aura is characterized by the presence of transient neuropathy before a migraine attack. These diseases are often visual. We refer to migraines as visual aura, or ophthalmic migraines. Several preventable risk factors have been identified. Different treatments and prevention solutions are possible.


Migraine with aura, what is it?

Definition of migraine with aura

Migraines with aura are different from normal migraines, which are called migraines without aura. Migraine is a form of headache that manifests itself in repeated attacks. This results in pain in the head which is usually unilateral and throbbing.


Aura is a transient neurological disorder that precedes a migraine attack. Migraine with visual aura, or ocular migraine, represents 90% of cases. In other cases, pre-migraine may be a sensory disorder or a language disorder.


Causes of migraines including aura

The origins of migraines are still poorly understood.

In the case of migraines, including aura, the activity of neurons in the brain may be disrupted. Decreased cerebral blood flow may be an explanation.

There seems to be a genetic predisposition as well. More research is needed to better understand the causes of migraine with Aura.


Risk factors

Observational studies have identified some factors that may encourage migraine attacks. Among them especially:

Positive or negative emotional variation;

An abnormal change in rhythm such as intense physical exertion, overwork or, conversely, relaxation;

Too little or too much sleep;

Hormonal imbalances such as decreased estrogen levels during menstruation;

Sensitive changes such as sudden change in light or presence of strong odor;

Climate change such as the arrival of heat, cold or strong winds;

Changes in eating habits such as drinking, overeating or eating disorders.


Diagnosis of migraine with Aura

Physical examination is usually sufficient to diagnose migraine. It is only diagnosed after two migraine attacks with Ara. No other disorder should be able to explain the onset of headaches.


People with migraines, including Aura

Migraines with aura are not the most common. They only concern 20 to 30% of migraine patients. With or without Ava, migraines can affect anyone. However, they seem to mainly affect adults before the age of 40. Prepubertal children seem to have a higher risk of migraines. Finally, statistics show that women are most prone to migraines. About 18 to 6% of women are infected, compared to only 15% of men.


Symptoms of migraine with aura

Potential related disorders

Migraine attacks are often accompanied by:

Density disturbance;

Digestive problems, such as nausea and vomiting;

Photo Phonophobia, sensitivity to light and sound.

 

Treatment of migraine with aura

Different levels of treatment can be considered:

Painkillers and / or anti-inflammatory drugs at the onset of crisis;

Anti-nausea drugs if necessary;

Treatment with triptans if the first treatment is not effective;

A disease-correcting treatment that may be hormonal or rely on a beta-blocker diet if other treatments prove ineffective.

To avoid the risk of recurrence, it is also recommended to take preventive measures.


Prevent migraine with aura

Identify the factors that could be the source of a migraine attack and then prevent it. So, for example, it is recommended:

Maintain good eating habits;

Establish a regular sleep schedule;

Don’t neglect warm-ups before sports;

Avoid excessively violent physical and sports activities;

The fight against stressors.
